Growing Beetroot in Your Garden

Beetroot thrives the best in light, sandy soil. It's best if it is well drained, and rich in organic matter.

With a germination temperature of 10 to 29 degrees, Beetroot seeds can be sown from early spring through to late summer.

Start sowing beetroot seeds in early spring as soon as the soil is workable. For a continuous supply, make regular sowings every 2-3 weeks until mid-summer. Sow thinly in shallow drills.

Once sowed, water carefully after sowing to settle the soil around the seeds. Consistent moisture is crucial for preventing woody roots and ensuring tender flesh.

Harvest beetroots when they are about the size of a golf ball for the best flavour and texture. Baby beets can be harvested earlier for tender, sweet roots.
