Benefits of Growing Kale Plants

As one of the most nutritionally dense foods on the planet (some call it a super food) it's a great addition to any dinner, and is even better when it's grown and picked with your own hands.

You should get two years of leaves from your kale plant as they are biennial plant, meaning it can last up to two years before going to seed and it can survive through harsh winters and really hot summers.

It's also a really versatile vegetable and tastes great in stir fries, smoothies and salads, and if you end up with more than you need, you can freeze the leaves to use them all year round.

Choosing the Right Kale Seeds

There are several varieties of kale seeds available on the Vegetable Seed Company website, each offering unique flavours, textures, and appearances.

Curly Kale: The most common variety with tightly curled leaves, perfect for salads and garnishes.

Lacinato Kale (Dinosaur Kale): Has dark blue-green, bumpy leaves that are ideal for soups and stews.

Red Russian Kale: Features flat, fringed leaves with a purplish-red hue, known for its mild flavor.

Siberian Kale: Hardy and cold-resistant, with tender leaves that are great for steaming or sautéing.

Baby Kale: Young plants and tender leaves that are perfect for fresh salads and smoothies.

Planting Kale Seeds

You can plant kale seeds directly in the garden, or start early indoors and transplant the seedlings once they are big enough for final planting.

The best time to sow seeds outside is in early spring, ready for a summer harvest or in later summer ready for an autumn harvest.

Plant the seeds in a well draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter and sow seeds around 1/2 an inch deep, and 12 inches apart.

These seeds thrive best when they are in full sunlight but they can tolerate some shade. Keeping young plants moist is really important - so be sure to keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged.

Caring for Kale Plants

Caring for kale plants involves providing them with adequate nutrients, water, and pest management:

Feed kale plants with a balanced fertiliser or compost tea every 4-6 weeks to promote healthy growth and water deeply and consistently, especially during dry periods, to ensure even moisture levels.

With proper care, your kale plants will thrive and provide you with a continuous supply of nutritious greens for months to come.
