How to Grow Sage Plants

Sage seeds like to be grown in the full sun, so pick a sunny pot in your garden or green house for this plant. If you begin them indoors, you can start to sow sage seeds around 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost and until the frost has passed.

Plant in barely moist seed compost or well drained soil on a seed tray, lightly cover with finely sieved compost and place them in the sun so they can grow into seedlings.

Once the plants are several inches tall and there is no more risk of frost, transplant the seedlings into a small pots or garden bed. Thin seedlings to about 30 cm apart. After moving them, water the roots to keep the soil moist and establish the plant.

Sage is a drought tolerant Mediterranean herb and only requires occasional watering during a dry spell.

After all the time and love put into this plant, once the plant is around 6 to 8 inches tall, you can begin to harvest leaves. It'll help the plant out too, as regular harvesting promotes fresh growth!
