Best Practices for Growing Aubergine Plants

Pinch Tip:

Pinching the tips of the main stem when plants are about 12 inches tall encourages bushier growth and increases fruit production. Use clean, sharp scissors or your fingers to remove the top growing tip. This will stimulate the plant to produce more side shoots.

Manage Side Growth

Regularly prune the side shoots to focus the plant’s energy on producing larger, healthier fruits. Remove any suckers (small shoots) that develop in the leaf axils. For tall varieties, use stakes or cages to support the plants and keep the fruit off the open ground below, reducing the risk of disease and fruit rot.

Air Circulation

Ensure proper spacing between plants (18-24 inches apart) to allow air to flow freely around each plant. Good air circulation reduces the risk of fungal diseases. Choose a sunny, open location for planting and avoid areas with poor airflow or excessive shade.
