When To Sow Celery Seeds
Indoor Sowing
It's best to sow celery seeds inside to give them a head start, before moving them outside. You should begin this process around 10-12 weeks before the last expected frost in your area. This means sowing inside from late winter to early spring.
Starting seeds indoors allows for controlled conditions, ensuring optimal temperature and moisture for germination, which is crucial for celery seeds as they require a long growing season.
Germination Conditions
Use a seed starting mix and keep the soil moist, but not water logged. Celery Seed needs light to germinate, so press them into the soil without covering them completely.
Place the seed trays in a warm location with temperatures around 70-75°F (21-24°C) and provide ample light, either from a sunny window or grow lights. Germination can take 2-3 weeks, so patience is key.
Transplanting Outdoors
Once the risk of frost has passed, and the seedlings are 4-6 inches tall, it's time to make the big move to outside. This usually falls around late May to early June.
Before transplanting, gradually harden off the seedlings by exposing them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7-10 days.
Choose a sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil, and space the plants about 12 inches apart in rows 12-16 inches apart to ensure they have enough room to grow.
