What Vegetable Plants to Put in Planting Pots

From tomatoes to peppers, most vegetables can be planted in pots, including some root crops and some of the best vegetables that are home grown come from containers and pots.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes thrive in containers, but they require a large pot with a diameter of at least 18 inches to accommodate their root system and provide stability. They also need staking or cages to support their vines and fruit as they grow. This support prevents the plant from toppling over and helps in keeping the fruits off the ground, reducing the risk of disease.

Peppers

Peppers, whether they are bell, hot, or sweet varieties, are well-suited to container growing. They require pots with a diameter of about 12 inches. These plants are relatively compact but need enough space to develop a healthy root system and produce a good yield.

Lettuce and Salad Leaves

Lettuce and other salad greens are excellent choices for container gardening. They grow quickly and can be harvested multiple times. These greens do well in smaller pots, with diameters ranging from 6 to 12 inches. The shallow roots of these plants make them perfect for container growth, and their fast-growing nature means you can enjoy fresh greens regularly.

Carrots

Carrots need a pot that is at least 12 inches deep to accommodate their long roots. Loose, sandy soil is essential for proper root development and to prevent the roots from becoming stunted or misshapen. Container-grown carrots can be an excellent option as they avoid the common soil issues found in garden beds.

Beans

Beans are versatile and can be grown in containers with a diameter of about 12 inches. Bush beans do not require additional support, making them a simpler option for container gardening. Pole beans, on the other hand, will need stakes or a trellis to climb. Both types of beans can produce a generous harvest when grown in pots. This includes dwarf french beans and green beans.

Spring Onions

Spring onions, or scallions, are another excellent choice for container gardening. They require relatively shallow pots, about 6-8 inches deep. Spring onions grow quickly and can be harvested as needed, making them a convenient addition to any container garden. These salad onions can be used in a variety of cooking so are a great addition.

Top Tips for Growing Vegetables in Pots

When growing in small containers, pots or window boxes, it's important to know how much space a vegetable needs to grow. Some need more space than others and this will help you choose the correct size pot.

Like all of our pots that we stock, all container plants should be in a pot that has proper drainage, this ensures both the plant and its roots are healthy during the growing season.

For some plants, regular harvesting will encourage growth.
