The Best Time to Sow Tomato Seeds

To ensure you get the most out of your harvest, it's best to sow tomato seeds at the perfect time so that you can enjoy your own fruit!

Indoor Sowing

For most regions, the best time to start tomato seed sowing indoors is 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost date.

This gives the seedlings enough time to grow strong before being transplanted outdoors.

Outdoor Sowing

Once the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures consistently reach 15°C or higher, you can sow seeds directly in the garden.

This typically occurs in late spring to early summer, depending on your climate.

Caring for Tomato Plants

Once planted, its best to water the seeds deeply and consistently - don't let the water dry out and water at the base to avoid fungal disease and to keep the foliage dry.

Tomatoes need around 6-8 hours of sunlight daily, so pick the sunniest spot in your garden or patio to plant these seeds.

For healthy growth, use an organic compost and fertilise every 4 to 6 weeks during the planting months.

When Should You See Tomato Seeds Germinating

Tomato seeds typically take 5 to 14 days to germinate under optimal conditions. Factors such as temperature, moisture, and light play crucial roles in this process. Ideally, seeds should be kept in a warm environment, with soil temperatures around 21-27°C, to encourage quick sprouting.

During this time, it’s essential to maintain consistent moisture in the soil without overwatering, as soggy conditions can lead to rot. Once germination begins, you should see small green sprouts emerging from the soil, signalling that your tomato seeds are off to a healthy start. Be patient, as some varieties may take longer than others to break through the surface.
