Types of Broccoli Seeds and Varieties

Growing Broccoli in Your Garden

When picking a soil to plant your broccoli in, be sure to avoid heavy clay soils as these retain too much water. Enrich the soil you use with some good organic matter prior to planting. You can even add chicken pellets to supply additional nitrogen which will help with growth.

Germinating best at 10 to 29 degrees and thriving at 15 to 21 degrees, it's best to sow this vegetable in early spring or late summer for an autumn harvest. It can tolerate some light frosts, so you don't need to be too worried about it as it gets a bit cooler.

Broccoli is best sown open ground, this allows the seed to develop a strong root system and larger heads. You can also plant in small pots first, and once the pot grown broccoli is big enough to hold, it's time to plant it outside.
