Varieties of Radish Seed
Winter Radish Varieties
Winter radishes, also known as Daikon or Asian radishes, mature later in the season compared to spring and summer varieties. They are typically sown in late summer to early autumn and harvested in late autumn to early winter.
These radishes tend to grow larger and longer than their spring counterparts, providing more substantial roots for culinary use. One of the key benefits of winter radishes is their ability to be stored for longer periods compared to earlier sown radish. When kept in cool, humid conditions, they can last for several months, allowing for fresh radish consumption well into the winter.
Salad Bowl
This variety is popular for its crisp texture and mild flavor, making it perfect for fresh salads.
It's best sown in spring and autumn for continuous harvests and prefers well-drained, fertile soil.
French Breakfast
This variety has an elongated shape and red top with a white tip, and it is know for its tender, mild flavour. It's also a really fast growing radish.
Ideal for cooler temperatures and can be harvested in about 3-4 weeks from sowing. Great for quick, successive sowing seeds.
How to Grow Radish Plants
Radish seeds can tolerate some light shade, but its best to choose a location that also sees the sun. Radishes prefer soil that has been raked and is free of rocks and large clumps and raked and prepared soil.
Sow radish seeds directly into the soil for the best results and plant seeds about ½ inch deep and 1 inch apart in rows that are 12 inches apart. For a continual harvest, sow seeds every 10-14 days from early spring through late summer.
