Looking After Sweet Corn Seeds

For optimal flavour, opt for varieties such as yellow kernels to get the best, and most sweetest, tasting sweetcorn. Prepare soil with organic matter and ensure good drainage.

Sow your seeds in small pots from mid April to early may, or directly into the ground in early June. Sweetcorn seeds like to be kept moist, so don't let the soil dry out (especially during dry spells), and place them in a sunny area, as they need lots of light to thrive.

If you started your seeds inside, transplant seedlings 12 inches apart in rows 30 inches apart. Before planting them outside for good, gradually expose seedlings to outdoor conditions before transplanting.

Varieties of Sweetcorn Seeds

Yellow kernels are a hallmark of many sweetcorn varieties, offering a rich, sweet flavour that appeals to many gardeners.

It's best to select varieties known for their exceptional sweetness and flavour, ensuring a delightful crop!

Ideal for regions with shorter growing seasons are the varieties that have early maturity (there also great it you're so excited to try and just want it as soon as possible!)

If available, choose varieties with good disease resistance, such as to corn smut or common rust, to ensure a healthy crop without the need for excessive pesticide use.
