How to Grow Cabbage Seeds?

Cabbage varieties are grouped into four categories: Spring harvesting, summer harvesting, autumn harvesting and winter harvesting. So if you plan it right, and order seeds from each variety, you can have cabbages in your vegetable patch each season.

When choosing, if you want to know seeds that perform the best, check to see if they have an RHS Garden Merit award, this RHS award indicated that variety of seed performed will in their trials.

When picking the perfect spot for these veggie seeds, remember that cabbages love a sunny site with firm, fertile and well drained soil. If possible, try not to grow cabbages in the same spot they, or any member of the brassica family, were the previous year. Before sowing, prepare the soil by adding garden compost.

Once everything is ready to go, it's time to get sowing. It's best to sow in small batches in the ground. Here are the best times to start planting and sowing each group:

Sow these seeds thinly in a seed tray or the ground in a drill around 2 cm deep.

Caring for Your Cabbage Plants

Growing cabbage plants is fairly straight forward, so if you are new to growing vegetables, they are a great seed to get your vegetable patch looking full.

Our first tip is to ensure the seedlings and young plants are regularly watered - try to never let the soil dry out. Once established, you should only need to water these during dry spells. However, once the heads begin to form, it's good to water generously to increase the size.

To help keep moisture and suppress any weeds, apply a layer of mulch (garden compost or manure) around the plants. If you do see any weeds pop up, make sure to get rid of them as they can steal light and other nutrients from the cabbages.

In the early spring, feed the plants a nitrogen rich food and you'll be encourage strong growth.
