A Guide To Growing Peas

Add together our high quality pea seed selection, containers or garden beds, soil, sunlight and a bit of care and what do you get? A Pea plant that will produce these vegetables for a long period!

When to Plant

Sowing at the right time is the best way to get successful and heavy crops. As soon as the soil can be worked (around 4-6 weeks before the last frost) pea seeds can be planted, they only need a soil temperature of around 7 degrees.

Depending on the variety you choose, they can be planted at different times of the year depending on when you want to harvest. Some are early spring varieties and some are best sown in late summer.

To enjoy a continuous harvest, plant pea seeds in succession every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.

Sowing Seeds

In the sunny spot you choose to plant the seeds, loosen the soil with a tiller and mix in compost to improve the fertility of the soil.

Plant pea seeds about 1 inch deep. For sandy soil, plant slightly deeper; for heavy clay soil, plant slightly shallower. It's best to sow seeds 2 inches apart along a row. Space rows 18-24 inches apart.

Water the soil lightly immediately after planting to settle the seeds. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during germination and early growth stages.

Supports

Peas are climbing plants and benefit from support to help them grow. It's best to install these early at planting time to avoid disturbing the roots of the plants later on.

Heavy Cropping Techniques

To ensure you get the best results, select a high yielding pea variety that's best suited to your garden space. The best soil is fertile and mixed with compost or manure.

By using supports, you encourage vertical growth which extend the number of pods per plant.
